Oct 15, 2024

We are proud to share news that the Louis A. DePasquale playground was recently named a 2024 “Best of Boston” / Best Outdoor Play Space by Boston Magazine. The recognition was noted for enabling “Kids (to) let their imaginations run (truly) wild at this fairy-tale-like 30,000-square-foot playground.”The playground, located at Danehy Park on Field Street, was the first playground in Cambridge to fully incorporate universal design across all of its play structures. It opened in December 2021. In addition to physical accessibility, universal design takes sensory, cognitive, and emotional abilities into consideration to create an environment that is welcoming to all people to the greatest extent possible. In addition to inclusive play features, sustainability was a priority in design. Natural and recycled materials were incorporated as much as possible, and over 60 new trees were planted across the play area. The “Sensory Hilltop’s” Black Locust wood was harvested from trees removed during the City’s Glacken Slope Restoration Project.
